One sided?

In the video the speaker had a great point that really made my wheels start to turn in my head.  When she began to speak of telling stories from the side of the Native Americans rather than the"Whitemans" point of view it struck me hard that in todays learning atmosphere in ways more than less we are headed down a path that is leaning towards a one sided story.  When she admitted to passing judgement on the people of Mexico, i too fell subject to that guilt.  When i went to Mexico on a cruise as sad as it may be to admit but from everyting i've heard i was expecting dirt roads, adobe houses, cactus, donkey's with small dirty children clothed in hand sewn wrags.  Baffled when i walked off the boat and into the town i was 100% wrong about the people there.  There were paved roads traffic lights, cars and busses taking people to and from work, Mc'Donalds with a drive through, kids walking home from school with back packs and nice clothes.  I was absolutely wrong to believe and judge the people and there country the way i did but who is to blame? After all the only side of the story of how they live was through the very education i recieve at CHS and what i see on television about adopting kids and helping with building homes with a church group, so who's fault is it for me to pass judgement on an entire society when everything I've seen and heard is negative?  Im not going to point any fingers because i could have gone out of my way to see things from a different side however i chose to believe those things because of the repeated use of the only thing South of California's borders are poverty stricken Hispanic families who come to America to change that.  That is not that case though, my point exactly is that in a way the government does control what we hear by telling us facts and cold hard truth, with the exception of telling the small details of other sides of the stories.  No the Government is not lieing to us, but, are they telling us the complete truth with every side to the story?

  1. Kenny after reading your reflection i learned another eay to look at the things we are learing about. The thought of juding people because of the way our history book taught us about them never crossed my mind. Many people can admit from juding a certain race or nationality by what they read in magazines or newpapers, or watching the news channel on the television. After learing about the new law passed in Arizona which tightens up border control can cause judment about the people migrating from Mexico to America seeking oppertunity to begin a new life. Good exmple of the judgment with the personal story of you going to Mexico and not expecting what you saw. I think you could have talked about a couple other things such as what we had talked about in class also not just your story about traveling to Mexico.
